JPEG: dependable for photographs

JPEG is broadly compatible and efficient for natural scenes. Use it for thumbnails, reference photos, and ordinary camera frames when transparency is unnecessary.

Its lossy compression can create halos around text and sharp graphics. Keep a high-quality master if the frame will be edited repeatedly.

PNG: crisp and lossless

PNG is the safest option for slides, interfaces, diagrams, and frames with small text. It preserves hard edges and repeated saves do not introduce additional lossy compression.

The cost is file size. A photographic PNG contact sheet can become unnecessarily large.

WebP: efficient modern delivery

WebP often provides a useful quality-to-size balance for websites and modern applications. It can support both lossy and lossless encoding, though the exact export behaviour depends on the tool.

Check compatibility with the publishing, editing, or document system receiving the image. JPEG remains the least surprising handoff format.

Choose JPEG for photographic sharing, PNG for text-heavy or lossless editing, and WebP for web delivery when the target supports it.

The source quality still matters more than the extension. No output format repairs an out-of-focus or motion-blurred frame.

Compare using the same frame

Format comparisons are meaningful only when they use the same timestamp, dimensions, and source. Export one representative frame in each candidate format, then compare text edges, gradients, facial detail, file size, and compatibility in the destination application.

Do not compare a sharp PNG from one timestamp with a blurred JPEG from another. Timing and source quality can overwhelm the visible difference between encoders.

A practical handoff strategy

Keep a PNG master when further editing or lossless archiving matters. Produce a JPEG derivative for broad photographic compatibility or a WebP derivative for a web property that you control and have tested.
